TLOTLO MOTHWANE

ARTIST STATEMENT

I am an artist from Johannesburg known for my evocative mixed-media compositions and drawings that blend semi-abstraction and surrealism. My work incorporates diverse influences and perspectives, transcending conventional boundaries with a unique aesthetic.

A central theme in my art is the transformative potential of apparel design, using garments as mutable canvases. Through mixed media, I explore the interplay between the tangible and intangible, highlighting the dichotomy between physicality and spiritual essence. My nuanced use of color and monochrome creates a visual dialogue that invites viewers into ethereal and terrestrial realms.

Rooted in personal experience, my art serves as a vessel for introspection and catharsis, conveying the emotions of life's journey. Drawing inspiration from various sources, I translate significant moments into visual narratives that resonate with universal truths. My work also addresses broader societal issues, offering commentary on social justice, inequality, and cultural identity with an anime-inspired aesthetic and contemporary sensibility.

Born in rural North-West, my artistic journey is driven by purpose and resilience. Overcoming familial skepticism and material constraints, I use my art as a catalyst for change, envisioning a future of generational prosperity and enlightenment. Through creativity, I aim to empower and inspire, forging new pathways of possibility and meaning.

Soul Half Full

During the creation of this art piece, the artist was reflecting on how individuals have the power to create their own image.

Here we “hold” the power to view ourselves in whatever way we choose.

Our perspective can either fill or empty our souls.

With each edition, no artwork will be exact and as perspective changes, so might the art.
